A Brief History

Crystal Roy is a Canadian artist, born in Sudbury and is currently living and working in Newmarket, Ontario. In her series, “The Tea Party,” Roy uses her painterly style to portray tea, coffee and espresso cups and saucers on white and wood-grain backgrounds. “I paint these cups because I love gathering with family and friends; this always ends up happening around a drink or two”. Roy explains “You’ll often find me drinking tea, I love the thought, time and artistry that was put into the cups I paint. I want this gorgeous flatware to shine. They trigger people’s emotions, making them happy, excited, and nostalgic.”

Her latest series, “The Fire Pit”, again addresses the theme of gathering. She draws from her passion for meeting loved ones at a bonfire on warm summer nights as inspiration. “I love the conversions that happen around the fire; the laughs, the memories, meeting old friends and making new ones. There’s something about gathering around a fire that brings people closer together for me”.

After years away from the studio Roy has been craving new forms of expression and the value of what she chooses to surround herself with. Therefore, she has chosen subjects that gather people together; “I value great relationships and interpersonal connections in today’s social media age”. Her work combines academic techniques with innovative subjects and compositions, in order to showcase her subjects with a whimsical and fresh style.
